How to Install Geogrid for Road Base Reinforcement: Step-by-Step Guide

Por GeoTexGrid Engineering Team

Proper installation is critical to getting the full structural benefit from your geogrid. A poorly installed grid can negate the design intent and shorten pavement life. This guide walks through the standard procedure for road base reinforcement.

Step 1: Site Preparation

Clear and grade the subgrade to the design elevation. Remove organic material, large stones, and debris. Compact the subgrade to the specified density before placing the geogrid.

Step 2: Roll Out the Geogrid

Unroll the geogrid in the direction of the main traffic load. For biaxial geogrid, the longitudinal direction should align with the direction of maximum stress. Keep the grid flat and free of wrinkles.

Step 3: Overlapping

Overlap adjacent rolls by a minimum of 30 cm (12 inches) in both directions. For soft soils, increase the overlap. Overlaps ensure load transfer between panels.

Step 4: Anchoring

Anchor the geogrid at the ends using pins or by burying the edges. This prevents movement during aggregate placement.

Step 5: Aggregate Placement

Place the first layer of aggregate carefully to avoid disturbing the grid. Avoid sharp turns of heavy equipment directly on the exposed grid. The first lift should be a minimum of 15 cm thick.

Step 6: Compaction

Compact the aggregate in layers to the specified density. Ensure the grid remains tensioned and properly positioned during compaction.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Placing aggregate directly onto the grid from height
  • Insufficient overlap between rolls
  • Failing to anchor the grid ends
  • Driving equipment directly on the exposed grid
